Adoption and Surrogacy

Although it's not as well documented as postpartum depression, Post-Adoption Depression (PADS) is not uncommon: In a 2012 study from Purdue University, between 18 and 26 percent of adoptive mothers (depending on the screening scale) reported depressive symptoms within the first year of bringing home a new baby or child. (Rates for the small number of adoptive fathers also surveyed were similar.)" Read more.

Postpartum Depression, You’re Not Alone

Welcoming a new baby into the world can be the happiest day of a mom’s life. But that time can be tough for women battling with postpartum depression. Dr. Rachel Wykes, an OB/GYN with Lee Health says postpartum depression is a common diagnosis that can last a few weeks after delivery. “Postpartum depression is an exacerbation of the blues and the stress. There are a ton of emotional and hormonal changes that happen and not to mention the physical changes your body is going through.” Symptoms of postpartum depression can be trouble sleeping, overly emotional, irritable, and inability to concentrate. Doctors say if the symptoms last longer than a few weeks, moms could be dealing with depression. “Less than 20 percent of women report to their doctors that they’re feeling depressed, so it’s important to really dig and assess their symptoms. What we do is screen every single woman that walks through the door, once in pregnancy and then again in postpartum with a standardized questionnaire,” said Dr. Wykes. Risk factors for postpartum depression can be having babies close together, having trouble breastfeeding, or having an unplanned pregnancy. “It’s really important for women to understand this is a medical diagnosis. This is not something that is their weakness. This is a real thing,” said Dr. Wykes. Doctors encourage moms to participate in social groups, surround themselves with supportive family and friends and make time for themselves every day. Counseling and medications can also be helpful. Anything to help moms cope and feel more connected to their baby.
